This prestigious international wine challenge awarded Grand Gold to Guelbenzu Evo 2013 and Gold to Señorío de Sarría Reserva Especial 2014, Señorío de Sarría Reserva 2015, Señorío de Sarría Crianza 2016, Señorío de Sarría Viñedo No.5 2019 and Lleiroso Crianza 2017.
The wines produced by the different wineries of the BORNOS Bodegas & Viñedos group continue their run of success at the leading international wine challenges. As many as nine wines won top awards at the prestigious international Concurso Mundus Vino 2020, which was founded 14 years ago and is held in Germany. 7,500 wines from all over the world were tasted by a professional judging panel of 268 wine experts made up of sommeliers, wine critics, œnologists, producers and distributors from 54 countries.
The panel awarded a Grand Gold medal to Guelbenzu Evo 2013, a Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend aged 12 months in French oak barrels. The other varieties in the blend are Graciano, Tempranillo, Merlot and Syrah. The grapes are sourced from the winery’s 46 hectares of vines in La Lombana.
Four wines produced by Bodega de Sarría, in the Navarra Designation of Origin, won Gold Medals. Señorío de Sarría Reserva Especial 2014, made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Graciano and aged two years in new French and American oak barrels displays a very deep black-cherry colour. The nose is powerful with fine toasted notes, spices, vanilla and cocoa, while the palate is elegant and structured. Señorío de Sarría Reserva 2015, a red wine made with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, was aged two years in French and American oak barrels. The wine displays a dark black-cherry colour and reveals intense aromatics on the nose with notes of vanilla and cinnamon, together with toasted, spicy hints. The palate is powerful, flavoursome, structured and complex with well-integrated oak. Señorío de Sarría Crianza 2016, is a delicious wine offering an intense mix of red berry and black fruit aromas mingling with floral and spicy notes. Powerful on the palate, the wine is also fresh and balanced with well-defined spicy fruit character and creamy vanilla hints coming through. The special rosé, Señorío de Sarría Viñedo Nº 5, once againwon a medal, this time for its 2019 vintage, thus continuing its long medal-winning streak. It is made exclusively from Grenache grapes sourced from vines of over 60 years’ age.
The fifth Gold Medal winner was the Crianza from Bodegas Lleiroso, a winery from the Ribera del Duero appellation, which became part of the BORNOS group in 2018. More specifically, it was the Lleiroso Crianza 2017, which is a straightTempranillo aged 12 months in French oak barrels. The wine displays a bright, deep, black-cherry colour. On the nose, ripe fruit aromas come through mingling with subtle oak. It is full, velvety and balanced on the palate.
No less important were the three Silver Medals won by wines produced by Bodega Palacio de Bornos of the Rueda Designation of Origin: Palacio de Bornos Verdejo 2019, Palacio de Bornos Sauvignon Blanc 2019 and Palacio de Bornos Brut.
Nine medals in all that add to the long list of awards achieved over recent years and which demonstrate the high quality of the range of wines produced by the different wineries of the BORNOS Bodegas & Viñedos group.
“We are delighted with all these awards, not only because of the high levels of quality demanded by Mundus Vini, one of the most renowned wine challenges in the world, but also because of the importance that these awards hold in Germany, one of our main export markets,” mentioned Fernando Zaratiegui, the General Manager of BORNOS Bodegas & Viñedos.
