This prestigious international wine challenge awarded a Gold Medal to Palacio de Bornos Verdejo 2018, Palacio de Bornos Brut, Señorío de Sarría Reserva Especial 2013, Señorío de Sarría Viñedo Sotés 2014 and Lleiroso Reserva 2014.
Orot Crianza 2015 also won a Silver Medal.
The wines produced by the different wineries of the BORNOS Bodegas & Viñedos group continue their run of success at the leading international wine challenges. As many as five wines won top awards at the prestigious international Concurso Mundus Vini 2019. Since its creation in 2001, this wine challenge has sought to promote high quality wine production and enhance the sales of the wines taking part. It is one of the largest wine challenges in the world and was held this year in Germany between February 20th and 25th. It was founded by Meininger Verlag and this year brought together 6,700 wines from 44 countries. The judging panel, made up of 270 expert œnologists, producers and distributors, gave the highest awards to five wines produced by the Bornos group.
A Gold Medal was awarded to the young unoaked D.O. Rueda Palacio de Bornos Verdejo 2018. This wine displays a straw-yellow colour with light greenish glints. It reveals intense floral aromas on the nose and fresh acidity and fruity notes on the palate. Palacio de Bornos Brut, a straight Verdejo aged two years in bottle, offers fine, rounded and well-integrated bubbles. It is powerful and complex on the nose with notes of white flowers and wild herbs. It is full, fresh and with great structure on the palate.
Mundus Vini also awarded Gold Medals to two wines from Bodega de Sarría, D. O. Navarra: Señorío de Sarría Reserva Especial 2013, made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Graciano and aged two years in new French and American oak barrels. This wine displays a very deep black-cherry colour. On the nose, it is powerful with subtle toasted oak, spices, vanilla and cocoa notes and with an elegant, structured palate. Also Señorío de Sarría Viñedo Sotés 2014, a Crianza wine aged nine months in new French oak barrels and made up of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo (Carignan). This wine shows a black-cherry colour with complex, elegant aromas of black fruits with balsamic hints and pleasant oak on the palate.
The fifth wine to win a Gold Medal was the Reserva of Bodegas Lleiroso, a winery in the Ribera del Duero appellation which has recently become part of the BORNOS group. The wine, a Lleiroso Reserva 2014, isa straight Tempranillo aged 15 months in new French oak barrels. It shows a very deep ruby colour, an intensely aromatic nose with subtle toasty oak and ripe red berry fruit. Elegant, ripe tannins come through on the palate with volume and a long finish.
No less important was the Silver Medal won by Orot Crianza 2015. Made solely from the Tinta de Toro variety and sourced from old bush vines, the grapes were harvested by hand and carefully sorted on arrival at the cellars. It was aged one year in American and French oak barrels, which enhanced its very dark cherry-garnet colour. On the nose, the wine reveals elegant, very intense aromas of fruit with mineral and spicy notes.
Five medals won then, which add to the long list of awards achieved over the last years and which demonstrate the high quality of the range of wines produced at the different wineries that make up the BORNOS Bodegas & Viñedos group.
“We are delighted with all these awards, not only because of the high quality levels demanded by the Mundus Vini wine challenge, which is one of the most renowned in the world, but also because of the importance that these awards hold in Germany, one of our main export markets,” pointed out Fernando Zaratiegui, the General Manager of BORNOS Bodegas & Viñedos.
